Cybersecurity Terms - K
Kerberos - (A computer-network authentication protocol that allows nodes (an individual computer or device in a network) communicating over a non-secure network to prove their identity to one another in a secure manner - a user is authenticated by one device, and, by use of a temporary encryption key, can communicate over the network with encrypted messages.)
keylogger (keystroke logger) - (A program that is designed to intercept and log keystrokes, sometimes installed remotely on keyboards.)
key derivation function (KDF) - (An algorithm used in key generation which uses random values to ensure that new keys will change, rather than being identical copies of the original key.)
Key Distribution Center (KDC) - (A Kerberos (computer-network authentication protocol) server which receives a request for service from a user, authenticates the user, and provides the user with a "ticket" containing an encryption key which allows the user to send and receive encrypted messages for a communication session.)
key encrypting key (KEK) - (A shared master key that is used to encrypt and exchange session keys between two parties.)
Key Management System (KMS) - (A system that manages keys within a cryptosystem - it deals with the generation, exchange, storage, replacement, use, and destruction of cryptographic keys.)
key performance indicator (KPI) - (An indicator considered of particular significance to management in judging/measuring the operation and goals of an information security management system (ISMS), or more generally, the performance of any division within an organization.)
key risk indicators (KRI) -
Kill Chain (Cyber Kill Chain) (A seven-stage intrusion model describing the steps an attacker takes to gain access to and exploit a system.
1. Reconnaissance, 2. Weaponization, 3. Delivery, 4. Exploitation, 5. Installation (persistence), 6. Command and Control (C&C), 7. Actions on the Objective.)knowledge discovery in database (KDD) - (also known as data mining) (A process of analyzing large volumes of data stored in a central storage device or location, called a warehouse, using tools that look for patterns, trends, correlations, relationships, and anomalies, without knowing the meaning of the data.)
known plaintext attack (KPA) - (In the area of cryptanalysis (the study of breaking, or solving, encrypted messages), the analyst compares encrypted messages with known plaintext (unencrypted) results/messages to guess what the enccryption key is.)
Kubernetes - (A software system which employs a set of independent application nodes, housed in "containers," which can be instructed or called on to operate individually or in groups, to perform various functions. Ideally, eliminates the need to program applications separately for different system areas - instead of setting up a printer individually, could call on a Kubernete node.)
