Cybersecurity Terms - B
backdoor - (an access mechanism often built into a program or software application by its developers to allow access to the program, often to facilitate quick and easy maintenance, or, in the the security area, to bypass security safeguard mechanisms.)
Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) - (Cloud-based service which provides data backup services and storage capabilities for organizations.)
Base Rate (BR) - (In malware analysis, or any analysis, the percentage of data fed into a system that has the quality being looked for or expected.)
basic input/output system (BIOS) - (Non-volatile firmware that initializes hardware at computer system startup.)
Basic Rate Interface (BRI) -
Basic Service Set (BSS) - (name given to group formed by, or consisting of, the access point (AP) of a wired network and the wireless devices (clients) connecting to the network)
Basic Service Set Identifier (BSSID) -
binary or binaries - (In the field of malware analysis, a generic term applied to executable malicious programs or malicious program codes or malicious files. Sometimes referred to as malicious binaries, or executables.)
Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) - (A fatal system error in Windows that stops the system from starting. Named for the blue background and white text error message.)
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) - (A protocol commonly used by Internet service providers to route data from one location to the next on the Internet. It enables routers on different systems to share routing information to ensure effective and efficient routing of data between different networks.)
bot - short term for "robot" (The term "bot" can refer to the malicious software installed on a compromised computer or to the infected computer. The compromised computer is also referred to as a "zombie" which can be controlled remotely. A network of compromised computers is referred to as a "botnet".)
botnet - robotically-controlled network (A network of compromised computers, infected with malicious code. Each infected computer is referred to as a "bot".)
bring your own cloud (BYOC) - (Situation where a user or employee can subscribe to their own cloud service simply by selecting from a cloud provider menu.)
bring your own device (BYOD) - (mobile device environment in which employees are allowed to use their personally owned devices to access, store, and process data belonging to their employers or organizations)
Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (BISDN) - (A broadband (transmission technology which divides one communication channel into multiple subchannels) form of Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) which is capable of transmitting digital (discrete voltage values) data over traditional analog dial-up phone lines.)
Browser Exploitation Framework (BeEF) - (Attack framework which allows an attacker to make multiple changes to an attack approach in order to attack/exploit browsers in different ways.)
Browser Helper Object (BHO) - (An "object," (reusable software code component used in object-oriented programming for repetitive procedures), which is used to help a browser load web pages.)
Browser Helper Object Trojan attack (BHO Trojan attack) - (A cyber attack method in which a BHO Trojan malware program replaces the code in the BHO with the attacker's code which executes during system startup. An "object," (reusable software code component used in object-oriented programming for repetitive procedures), which is used to help a browser load web pages.)
business continuity (BC) - (general concept involving the ability of a business to continue operating at some level following a disaster)
business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) - (The planning involved for handling the sudden, unexpected, or catastrophic loss of systems or data for an organization. Type of planning which incorporates three concepts 1) resiliency, or the ability to deal with less-than-catastrophic events through the availability of redundant or backup systems; 2) recovery from outages or failures of portions of a system or environment or data corruption, through the use of saved data backups; and 3) disaster recovery caused by catastrophic losses, such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or fire, where planning may involve consideration of major changes, such as the creation or investment in alternate facilities or making alternative operational arrangements, if the area of primary operations has been totally destroyed.
business continuity management (BCM) - (The management process involving disaster recovery, the planning involved in recovery - the resumption of operations following a disaster - and business continuity planning - the long-term planning involved in keeping a business operating under various conditions.)
business continuity plan (BCP) - (A plan which incorporates a set of procedures, programs, and supporting plans that have been established to maintain the operations of an organization in the event of disruption or interuption casued by different levels of disaster.)
business continuity planning (BCP) - (The planning involved in maintaining business operations in the event of a disaster or disruption.)
Business Impact Analysis (BIA) - (A type of assessment in which a business identifies and prioritizes its assets, processes, and other critical types of operations in order to determine which of these must be recovered first after a disaster, in order to ensure business continuity.)
Business Reference Model (BRM) - (Classification method used in the federal system which classifies organizational activities by function.)
Business Requirements Document (BRD) -
robotically-controlled network (botnet) - (A network of compromised computers, infected with malicious code. Each infected computer is referred to as a "bot".)
