VAN - value-added network (In the field of supply chain management and electronic data interchange (EDI), a network developed and maintained by a service bureau (outside contractor), which handles orders for customers (large retail stores), by acquiring, tracking, and delivering items ordered by the customer - eliminates the need for the customer to handle the ordering process internally.)

VBAC - View-Based Access Control (Access control method which restricts user access to certain types of data in a database. A database administrator may allow a manager to view employee work records, but not their salary information.)

VBR - variable bit rate (A transmission networking technology within the Quality of Service (QoS) subscriber area, where data transmission rates may vary because customers with higher priority will have their data transmitted first, forcing lower priority customer transmissions to delay transmission of their data.)

VDS - Vulnerability Discovery Service (Service within a Security Operations Center (SOC) which focuses on Vulnerability Scanning-as-a-Service (VSaaS) identifying potential vulnerabilities in the IT environment resulting from poor system configuration, hardware or software flaws, or operational deficiencies, using automated scanning tools.)

VDSL - Very High-Data-Rate Digital Subscriber Line (A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) with higher data rates (13 Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream), capable of supporting high-bandwidth applications, such as HDTV, telephone services (Voice over IP), and general Internet access over a single connection.)

VF - Virtual Firewall (A network firewall service or appliance that operates within a virtualized environment to provide similar security features as a physical firewall.)

VLAN - virtual local area network (A group of devicesd on one or more LANs that are configured to communicate as if they were attached to the same wire (such as the same broadcast domain), when in fact they are located on a number of different LAN segments.)

VM - virtual machine (A virtual system which operates inside a host physical machine and, to the user, looks like a normal system. The virtual machine is created by an application known as a hypervisor (or virtual machine monitor) and provides access to both physical and logical resources.)

VMM - virtual machine manager (An alternative name for a hypervisor, an application which creates and runs a virtual machine (VM).)

VoIP - Voice-over-Internet Protocol (Communication system in which voice data (phone calls) are being made over an Internet Protocol (IP) network, using digital technology (discrete voltage values or elecrical pulses), which may involve radio-frequency wireless or fiber-optic cable (light wave) technology, instead of the traditional copper-wired telephone company network, which used analog technology (wave values), also called the public-switched telephone network (PSTN).)

VPLS - virtual private local area network service (A virtual local area network connecting two or more customer devices over a managed network.)

VPN - virtual private network (A secure, private connection through an untrusted network, which encrypts messages sent over the connection.)

VRRP - Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (Protocol or system architecture setup which is designed to prevent system failure related to router failure by linking two physical routers mapped to a virtual router, with the working router taking over the workload if the other physical routers fails.)

VSAT - very small aperture terminal (A wireless satellite communications system which links a remote office to the Internet through a satellite gateway facility run by service provider.)

VSLs - violation security levels (A measure of the level of noncompliance a bulk electric system operator is with North American Reliability Corporation (NERC) guidelines.)
