L

L2F - Layer 2 Forwarding Protocol (CISCO proprietary system which provides a virtual private network (VPN) service - a technology which provides a secure connection (tunnel) between an organization's internal network and a remote device or network, over an unsecure external network, such as the Internet.)

L2TP - Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (An early virtual private network (VPN) - technology which provides a direct connection between a single computer and faraway local area networks (LANs) over a public connection, such as the Internet - jointly developed by Microsoft and Cisco. Although it has become an Internet standard, it is an encapsulation protocol, which provices transport and data protection services over an untrusted network, but is being replaced by newer VPNs, which provide greater security.)

LACNIC - Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Center (Regional Internet registry which provides overall management of public IP addresses for the Latin America and Caribbean region.)

LAMP - Linux, Apache, MySQL, Python (Term for a group of open-source software applications that can be used in developing a Web server.)

LAN - Local Area Network (A network (connected devices and systems) that provides shared communication and resources in a relatively small area.)

LANMAN - Local Area Network Manager (Early proprietary authentication protocol developed by Windows and included in Microsoft Windows NT. Because of security weaknesses, it was disabled by default starting with Windows Vista.)

LBA - logical block address (Method of addressing (or numbering) each sector on an ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) drive - the interface used to connect disk drives to a PC - using a single number to address each sector.)

LBR - laser beam recorder (Device used in CD manufacturing which fires pulses of blue/violet laser light to expose and soften portions of the photoresist layer on the glass master.)

LCC - leadless chip carrier (Early (1984) type of chip processor packaging (sealed container surrounding chips) which involved gold pads (lands) - thin layers of gold - on the bottom edges of the chip which provided a better contact surface and eliminated the need for soldering.)

LCD - liquid crystal display (Type of computer/device video display monitor screen which uses liquid-crystal cells containing chemicals whose response to polarized light can be controlled by an electric field to produce changes in the screen.)

L-CHS - logical cylinder head sector (Capability of tracking disk location addresses using a "translation" process at the BIOS (Basic input/output system) level, without renumbering the original location, allowing the operating systme to talk to the disk drive when it issues commands.)

LCP - Link Control Protocol (A protocol within a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) that establishes, configures, and maintains the network connection - carries out packet encapsulation format options, handles various limits on packet size, and terminates a link when necessary.)

LDAP - Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (Protocol which provides directory services, such as user directory, including user name, password, e-mail, and phone number information, to network clients.)

LDM - Logical Disk Manager database (Windows utility which maintains and organizes the data storage database.)

LDP - Line Printer Daemon protocol (UNIX program controlling line printer activity. A daemon is a program that runs continuously in the background, or is waiting to be activated by a particular event.)

LEAP - Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol (A proprietary protocol developed by Cisco, used in their wireless LAN devices for authentication.)

LED - light-emitting diode (computer monitor display)

LF - line feed (printer instruction)

LFE - low frequency effect (sound channels)

LGA - land grid array (processor connection sockets)

LHF - Low Hanging Fruit (In the context of cryptography, passwords for system access, which are easily guessed or commonly used. Term often used in a general sense for the most easily accomplished goals.)

Li-ion - Lithium-ion (rechargeable batteries)

LIF - low insertion force (processor sockets)

LIFO - last in, first out (memory retrieval)

Linux - Linus UNIX (operating system)

LIRs - Local Internet Registries

Lisp - List Processor (programming language)

LJR - Layer Jump Recording (DVD recording method)

LLC - Logical Link Control (In the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model, a data link layer process which provides message information about the data packets/frames being sent and synchronizes transmissions, so that senders/receivers know when a frame is being sent and when it should be received.)

LLC - Limited Liability Company (Company business structure, similar to a corporation.)

LLF - low-level formatting (disk formatting)

LLM - Large Language Model (In the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI), program or function capable of processing large amounts of data.)

LLTD - Link Layer Topology Discoverer (Windows network mapping)

LM - link manager (Bluetooth software)

LN - like new (sale item description)

LNIB - like new, in box (sale item description)

LOIC - Low Orbit Ion Cannon

LPI - lines per inch (print resolution measure)

LPT - line print terminal (PC connection ports)

LPX - Low Profile X (obsolete motherboard design)

LRA - linear resonate actuator (Smartphone vibrator)

LSA - Local Security Authority (Windows logon sessions)

LSB - least significant bit (In the area of steganography (the process of hiding messages in pictures or other media), a method of embedding messages in areas or bits within a file which will not alter the file in a visible manner. A message can be embedded in a graphics (picture) file without being noticed.)

LSOs - Local Shared Objects

LSO - local shared objects (flash cookies)

LTE - Long-Term Evolution (Mobile/4G)
