Computer/System Terms - V

  • value-added network (VAN) - (In the field of supply chain management and electronic data interchange (EDI), a network developed and maintained by a service bureau (outside contractor), which handles orders for customers (large retail stores), by acquiring, tracking, and delivering items ordered by the customer - eliminates the need for the customer to handle the ordering process internally.)

  • variable (var) - (Programming term for items which can change value during execution.)

  • variable bit rate (VBR) - (A transmission networking technology within the Quality of Service (QoS) subscriber area, where data transmission rates may vary because customers with higher priority will have their data transmitted first, forcing lower priority customer transmissions to delay transmission of their data.)

  • Very High-Data-Rate Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) - (A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) with higher data rates (13 Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream), capable of supporting high-bandwidth applications, such as HDTV, telephone services (Voice over IP), and general Internet access over a single connection.)

  • very large-scale integration (VLSI) - (manufacture of integrated circuits (silicon chips) containing 10,000 or more logic gates)

  • very small aperture terminal (VSAT) - (A wireless satellite communications system which links a remote office to the Internet through a satellite gateway facility run by a service provider.)

  • video compact disc (VCD) - (Format standard for video/digital audio recording, first introduced in 1993.)

  • video display terminal (VDT) - (computer screen/monitor)

  • Video Electronic Standards Association (VESA) - (video card industry trade group)

  • Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) local bus (VL-Bus) - (local bus design for video hard disk interface)

  • Video Gate Array (VGA) - (IBM video system)

  • Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) - (video system interface components)

  • Video Graphics Array (VGA) - (unit/collection of video interface devices - monitor, adapter and connection)

  • Video random access memory (VRAM) - (memory available to store and process images)

  • View-Based Access Control (VBAC) - (Access control method which restricts user access to certain types of data in a database. A database administrator may allow a manager to view employee work records, but not their salary information.)

  • violation security levels (VSLs) - (A measure of the level of noncompliance a bulk electric system operator is with North American Reliability Corporation (NERC) guidelines.)

  • virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) - (An implementation of a desktop display, complete with running applications, which appears as functional images and a functional system on a client computer. The actual applications, stored data, and underlying computing infrastructure are operated at a central location.)

  • Virtual Firewall (VF) - (A network firewall service or appliance that operates within a virtualized environment to provide similar security features as a physical firewall.)

  • virtual local area network (VLAN) - (A group of devices on one or more LANs that are configured to communicate as if they were attached to the same wire (such as the same broadcast domain), when in fact they are located on a number of different LAN segments.)

  • virtual machine (VM) - (A virtual system which operates inside a host physical machine and, to the user, looks like a normal system. The virtual machine is created by an application known as a hypervisor (or virtual machine monitor) and provides access to both physical and logical resources.)

  • Virtual Machine/Enterprise Systems Architecture (VM/ESA) - (IBM operating system capable of simulating multiple copies of itself)

  • virtual machine manager (VMM) - (An alternative name for a hypervisor, an application which creates and runs a virtual machine (VM).)

  • virtual page number (VPN) - (processor method of assigning/mapping/tracking memory fragments)

  • virtual private local area network (LAN) service (VPLS) - (A virtual local area secure network connecting two or more customer devices over a managed network.)

  • virtual private network (VPN) - (A secure, private connection through an untrusted network, which encrypts messages sent over the connection.)

  • Virtual Reality Markup Language (VRML) - (programming language to create three-dimensional objects for graphical display)

  • Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) - (programming language to create three-dimensional objects for graphical display)

  • Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) - (Protocol or system architecture setup which is designed to prevent system failure related to router failure by linking two physical routers mapped to a virtual router, with the working router taking over the workload if the other physical routers fails.)

  • virtual token (voken) - (advertisement that appears over the contents of a browser window (Web page) - similar to pop-up ad)

  • Visitor Location Register (VLR) - (database of mobile subscribers roaming within an area)

  • Visual Basic (VB) - (Windows programming language, introduced by Microsoft in 1991, which allows programmers to lay out a program's windows graphically.)

  • Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) - (Variation of Microsoft Visual Basic with the capability of writing macros (mini-programs of script code) which can execute various functions.)

  • Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) - (Communication system in which voice data (phone calls) are being made over an Internet Protocol (IP) network, using digital technology (discrete voltage values or elecrical pulses), which may involve radio-frequency wireless or fiber-optic cable (light wave) technology, instead of the traditional copper-wired telephone company network, which used analog technology (wave values), also called the public-switched telephone network (PSTN).)

  • voltage regulator module (VRM) - (device which senses CPU voltage requirements/calibrates itself to provide voltage)

  • volume boot record (VBR) - (The first sector of the bootable partition of a hard disk containing the operating system-specific boot code required for booting a PC system.)

  • Vulnerability Discovery Service (VDS) - (Service within a Security Operations Center (SOC) which focuses on Vulnerability Scanning-as-a-Service (VSaaS) identifying potential vulnerabilities in the IT environment resulting from poor system configuration, hardware or software flaws, or operational deficiencies, using automated scanning tools.)
